Misschien moeten we ons vorige artikel even bijstellen. Het risico dat je vliegtuig tijdens de vlucht door een stuk ruimtepuin in duizend stukjes vergruist blijft bestaan. Maar of Boeings het milieu keihard aan flarden vliegen is maar de vraag.



Een recent onderzoek meldt dat vliegen in sommige gevallen minder milieuvervuilend is dan transport met het openbaar vervoer. En dat zijn altijd mooie bevindingen: niet voor niets was bij Babalin al eerder te lezen dat het essentieel is om de gehele levenscyclus van een product te onderzoeken om tot een betere prijs te komen.

De belangrijkste oorzaken zijn: niet alleen het verrekenen van wat "een auto op zich" uitstoot, maar ook rekening houden met alle ins en outs van bijvoorbeeld:

• het productieproces van een auto (grondstoffen, energie, afval)
• aanleg en onderhoud van wegen
• aantal passagiers per auto per kilometer.

Zo kan een relatief energiezuinig vliegtuig, volgeladen met mensen, blijkbaar per reizigerskilometer minder milieuvervuilend zijn dan een bijna lege trein die wordt voorzien van elektriciteit door verbranding van steenkolen.

Al lijkt de methode zeer goed, het is een extreem scenario en de luchtvaartsector zal er (ondanks de lobbygestuurde staatssteun) niet vrolijker van worden, ook gezien de miljarden verliezen die vandaag worden gemeld.

Toch jammer. Wij hebben namelijk wel behoefte aan een spannende vakantie en gaan dus alsnog op zoek naar een zeer zuinig vliegtuig waar we met de voltallige redactie in kunnen. We boeken dan een vlucht naar Mexico, vergeten de mondkapjes en laten ons tijdens de vlucht masseren door groep wilde achondroplasten. En laat die meteorieten ook maar komen!
