Chinese Ping armste mens ter wereld
Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis is een Chinese de armste persoon ter wereld, blijkt uit het jaarlijkse overzicht van sociaal-wetenschappelijk onderzoeksinstituut Bruinlier & Vaantjes. De zevenjarige kleermaakster Ping Yun ("vredige wolk") uit het Chinese Wenzhou versloeg nipt Nigeriaan N'kwundo Amkalumi, waarmee zij het stokje van hem overneemt. Amkalumi kwam al drie keer eerder in de toptien voor en is daarmee een gerespecteerde bekendheid geworden in de omgeving van Ngelzarma, zijn woonplaats.
Volgens het instituut bedraagt het vermogen van de Chinese afgerond en omgerekend 0,005 euro. Dit vergaarde de doorzetster de afgelopen drie jaar met 16-urige werkdagen en vrijwel zonder weekends. "Het had meer kunnen zijn," vertelt Ping, "maar begrijp goed dat ik mijn grootouders, ouders, een invalide oom en drie zusjes moet onderhouden." Verrassend bleek dat Ping werkt voor een bedrijf, waarvan de CEO een stabiele middenmoter is in de onlangs door Forbes gepubliceerde lijst van rijkste personen.
Amkalumi reageerde sportief op de tegenvaller: "Als sjouwer van bakstenen kun je er vergif op innemen dat zo'n jonge en immense economie als de Chinese op een dag de nieuwe armste levert." De armste Europeaan blijkt overigens de Serviër Matko Branislav van het akkerbouwbedrijf пољопривреду Свако. Hij komt op de wereldranglijst slechts op een teleurstellende 1.168.377.128e plaats. Zijn onderkomen is een container van triplex op het erf van het bedrijf dat hem in natura betaalt. Branislavs vermogen bestaat uit exact een gevonden muntstuk, dat omgerekend ongeveer 1 eurocent waard zou zijn.
Volgens de nieuwe lijst van Bruinlier & Vaantjes is het aantal armen nog steeds groeiende. Klopt dat wel? Piethelm Vaantjes van het onderzoeksbureau: "Het aantal verdiende valuta's per hoofd neemt wereldwijd toe, maar dat is een gemiddelde en dus te eenvoudig. Bovendien blijkt echte armoede uit het gebrek aan de bevrediging van basisbehoeften en dat is als eerste voeding: hoeveel eten kun je krijgen voor je centen? Zelfs ondanks het feit dat de voedselproductie sneller stijgt dan de bevolking, neemt het aantal hongerigen toe. Het was ook te verwachten," zegt Vaantjes. "Steeds meer voedselgewassen worden gebruikt om uiteindelijk verbrand te worden als biobrandstof en het areaal bestemd voor hamburgers en andere vleesproducten neemt nog steeds toe, terwijl de wereldbevolking ook in omvang toeneemt."

"By the way, our new list shows that 1.2 billion has just been reached." The researchers will not do any predictions for the next Summer, which will probably become very warm and dry - and hence, will cause a noticeable enlargement of the list. "Such a climatic forecast seems to imply more poverty and hunger. Those often go hand in hand, that is a well-known fact.
